hey, guys.
im kellie from North Carolina and i have debated on whether to start taking classes, because i love to sing.
for about a month, i would sing along to every song on phantom of the opera, because thats all i had.
but im not sure what kind of classes i should take, or whether i'd be any good.
any advice?
i need to know if there's any way to tell if you would be a total disaster and what type of classes i should take.

ps: i would like to start listening to more opera, but im completely blank as to who's out there now.  could someone give me some names to get me started (modern or classical)?

If you love to sing, I would definitely take voice lessons. For me, taking lessons was one of the best decisions I've made: my voice improved dramatically, and I became more attached to singing as an art form. I'm not sure where you could look for classes, but they might be offered at a music store (which is where I took them) or through the music preparatory department of a local university.

As for listening to opera, I don't know which singers to listen to, but I would recommend experiencing opera as a whole art form. Instead of looking for recordings of singers, look for videos of performances and experience the story with the music. Then listen to different recordings of the songs you like. I'm still learning about opera myself, but I want to seek out Verdi and Rossini. Right now I'm a huge fan of Puccini's La Bohème, of which several videorecordings are available. The Chinese tour with Pavarotti and D'Amico was good, although the subtitles skipped most of the funny lines.

That's about all I know. Good luck with your pursuit of music!

and i'll definately check out your music suggestions.

taking private classes would be a great start - and a great way to see if you are any good! Andrea Bocelli is a enjoyable listen!
